NEGRAMARO: “Free Love” is the freedom to be authentic, to make mistakes and learn from mistakes

Interviews

Negramaro return with “Free Love”, their ninth studio album available from November 22nd.

Recorded in the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin, the album is a hymn to freedom, universal love and the courage to face life's obstacles. With twelve tracks and eight collaborations with artists of the caliber of Elisa, Jovanotti, Fabri Fibra and Tiziano Ferro, Free Love is an emotional journey that mixes roots, evolution and a deeply human and inclusive vision.

THE CONCEPT

The concept of “Free love” is expressed through the album cover, which hosts the original work “NARCISO” by Jago. The work represents man reflected in a woman and his opposite. Just as in Jago's work, in Negramaro's album there is a perfect symmetry of feelings.
Free love claims the freedom to love oneself and others, because loving is a right. Loving without prejudice, violence and discrimination. Every person is free to be who they are, to love who they want. A way of loving that does not allow possession or abuse and that looks at diversity as wealth.

The singles have already been extracted from the album “Diamonds (with Elisa & Jovanotti)”, “Until the New Day (feat. Fabri Fibra)”, “Ricominciamo tutto” (Sanremo 2024), “Luna Piena”, number one on the radio and Earone award as the most listened to independent Italian artist.

THE INTERVIEW

After twenty years of career and the ninth album, “Free Love”, what does this new work represent for you?

“Free Love” is a profound reflection on what we have become as a band and as people. It is a return to the roots, but with a new awareness, the fruit of experience. It is not just a musical record, but a container of emotions, hopes, dreams and even mistakes that taught us to be free. Freedom is the central theme: learning to live free from fears and prejudices, respecting others and ourselves.

You chose Berlin and the historic Hansa Studios to record the album. What was the contribution of this place to your music?

The atmosphere of Berlin and Hansa Studios is unique. Walking in the same corridors where artists like David Bowie, U2 and Depeche Mode worked gave us great inspiration. East Berlin is also the title of a song on the album, and represents that sense of rediscovered freedom that permeates the entire project.

The album features eight collaborations. How did you choose the artists to work with?

Many collaborations have arisen from long-standing relationships. We had already worked with Elisa and Jovanotti in the past, as well as with Malika Ayane. With Tiziano Ferro and Niccolò Fabi it was a meeting one evening in Puglia of like-minded souls that finally found space in music. Fabri Fibra, on the other hand, was a dream come true: we had been exchanging messages for years. JJ Julius Son, frontman of Kaleo, represents an absolute novelty. All these voices have helped us explore new nuances, without ever losing our identity.

The collaboration with Jago for the album cover makes sense for the whole project. How did this idea come about?

We fell in love with Jago's work “Narciso” because it perfectly reflects the concept of the album: man and woman, the self and the other, in a symmetry of feelings. We wanted that image to become the symbol of Free Love, an invitation to look inside ourselves to discover the humanity that binds us. Sculpture, like our music, is born from breaking to rebuild.

The song Free Love is almost a manifesto. Why did you choose this title for the album?

The mantra “Free Love” is the synthesis of everything we want to convey: unconditional love, freedom to be, to love without borders. It is a call to action, to overcome obstacles, to look beyond. This song was a cathartic moment for us and represents the essence of our evolution.

What does it mean for you to be free today?

Being free means having the courage to change, to make mistakes and to start again. This album is a warning first of all for ourselves: we must not fit into predefined patterns, but always try to overcome our limits, maintaining our identity. It is a freedom that is learned, respecting others and their uniqueness.

Freedom is everything. It is something that is learned, that evolves over time. It is never absolute or free of ties, but it is a condition that pushes you to do your best. This album wants to demonstrate precisely this: the freedom to be authentic, to make mistakes and learn from mistakes. Personally, I asked myself the question: how free can I really be? Here, Free Love is also a warning to myself.

After twenty years of career, what is the secret of your union as a band?

Friendship. We have experienced ups and downs, but we have grown together. Free Love is also the result of this journey: we compared ourselves, we pushed each other to be better, without ever losing our team spirit.

You said that the love song can become political. In what sense?

Love is a political gesture when it invites respect, equality, freedom. In Free Love we talk about a love that does not allow prejudice or discrimination. It is an invitation to live without fear of making mistakes, to find the courage to accept oneself and others. Today more than ever, loving is an act of resistance.

You mentioned time as a fundamental concept. How did it influence Free Love?

Time was central in every phase. The album was already ready between March and April, but we wanted to schedule the release so we could meet the public. We really missed direct contact with people. Time, however, does not only have to do with deadlines: each album is a photograph of a specific moment, of the life we are living. And this record tells exactly who we are today.
