Dr. Dre sued by divorce psychotherapist

Music news

Dr. Charles Sophy filed a lawsuit against Dr. Dre, accusing him of “ unbearable harassment “.

A psychotherapist sues Dr. Dre, accusing him of “damaging” him systematic and malicious ” of ” unbearable harassment » which led him to wear a bulletproof vest and fear for his life.

In a new lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Dr. Charles Sophy claims that Dre, born Andre Young, hired him in 2018 to mediate his divorce from Nicole Young. The psychotherapist says he worked “ diligently, independently and fairly ” to help the couple resolve their differences and stopped communicating with the rapper once the divorce agreement was reached in late 2021.

About 14 months later, Dr. Dre allegedly began sending her messages out of the blue, accusing her of acting inappropriately. “ Rather than viewing the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, Young decided to take out his frustrations on Dr. Sophy, frustrations which manifested themselves in a sustained nearly year-long campaign of nightly messages, threats intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric “, we can read in the lawsuit.

Contacted by WECB, Dre's lawyer, Howard King, explains that his client has already filed a “ confidential complaint » against Sophy before the Osteopathic Medical Board of California last year, in an effort to “ have Dr. Sophy punished for neglect of duty and incredible incompetence “.

This complaint seeks revocation of Dr. Sophy's authorization to provide mental health counseling to patients in need. In flagrant violation of all applicable standards of care, Dr. Sophy interfered in a contentious divorce while “treating” not only Mr. and Mrs. Young, but also their children. He was fired when it was revealed he encouraged one of their children to take sides against Mr Young, even encouraging his son to make false allegations in the press in order to force a financial settlement he recommendedsays Mr. King. Dr. Sophy has consistently rebuffed the College's attempts to investigate these allegations, but has now filed this desperate lawsuit as the noose tightens. »

According to the 22-page lawsuit signed by his lawyer Christopher Frost and obtained by WECBCharles Sophy claims that Dr. Dre sent him a text “ openly threatening ” around 10 p.m. on February 16, 2023, in which he claims that someone said something to him ” disturbing » and that Sophy was going “ have to pay for it “. The psychotherapist says he has “ tried to stay calm » and tried to “ defuse the situation “. The next day he responded by writing: “ Hello, I have no idea what you are referring to and I am available to discuss it at any time. THANKS. » The rapper would have replied: “ You screwed up! Just so you know, I love being underestimated “.

Sophy claims that Dre “got her falsely accused » for trying to turn an unidentified third person against him. “ There is no truth behind these baseless accusationsthe new lawsuit asserts. Sophy tried to ignore the threats and not follow through on them. Young did not want to let go “. According to the complaint, Dre sent another message on March 5, 2023, which read: “ What happened Doc? I thought you wanted to talk. Have you lost your language? You're going to have to give me a written apology. Otherwise, I'm moving forward. I'm not playing, believe me. »

The doctor says that in February 2023, “ immediately after sending the first messages “, he received a strange call from a security guard saying that individuals claiming to be FBI agents “ asked to be taken to Dr. Sophy’s residence to “talk” to her “. The doctor believes that these people were posing as agents in order to gain access to his residence and “ to send the clear message » that Dr. Sophy was not safe.

Dr. Sophy lives in constant fear. He wears a bulletproof vest whenever he sets foot outside, is afraid to leave his home and constantly looks behind him. The severity of Young's harassing and persistent behavior forced Dr. Sophy to seek redress and protection, the lawsuit states. No one should have to live in constant fear. But Dr. Sophy does, ironically for no other reason than trying to help Young resolve her own family's conflict. »

The lawsuit focuses on civil harassment, threats of violence based on his sexual orientation and a court order prohibiting contact. He is seeking compensatory damages of at least $10 million and punitive damages to be decided at trial.
