King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Flight b741

Reviews

Flight b741, a concept album that explores taking refuge in comforting music during times of conflict, only to discover that even the most familiar sounds can offer perpetual distraction.

On their twenty-sixth album, Flight b741, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard surprises again, but this time from a more intimate perspective. Far from the broad soundscapes that have characterized his recent productions, this work captures the essence of six friends creating music in an almost homely environment; a screening of a very fun weekend.

The choice of visual design is not accidental; it perfectly reflects the aesthetics of the album, which oscillates between tranquility and tempest, between introspection and sonic explosion; a flight that promises beauty and chaos, in keeping with the themes and energy that emanates from each song.

Opening with a chaotic energy, “Mirage City” It is an explosion of riffs strident and fast-paced percussion. The guitars intertwine in a hypnotic dance, while the voices narrate a journey through a metropolis distorted by perception. In “Antarctica”, King Gizzard transports us to the frozen landscape of the south, where ethereal melodies reflect the solitude and immensity of the white continent. The slow and enveloping rhythm of the song suggests the stillness and mystery of a place where time seems to freeze.

While creating a darker atmosphere in “Raw Feel”the band returns to a rawer, more direct sound. Sharp guitars and hard-hitting rhythms create a sense of urgency, while the lyrics address a sensorial moment, would you be willing to share it?

Through a mental landscape, where the vision expands and contracts to the rhythm of the music, in the fourth position is found “Field of Vision”. The combination of spatial sounds and riffs undulating creates an introspection, inviting you to explore your own internal field of vision. With an intriguing title, “Hog Calling Contest” -the album's climax- mixes humour with social criticism. The unbridled rhythms and abrupt changes in melody reflect the chaotic nature of an absurd competition; but it is also extremely fast and, for all its technical wizardry, it has an air from garage qwhich dates back to the group's earliest works.

“The Risk” plays with danger, both in its name and in its musical structure. Tempo changes and unexpected progressions create a sense of instability, while the band explores the inherent risks of life and artistic creation. On the other hand, in “Flight b741” is a sonic odyssey that encapsulates the essence of the album. With a structure that ranges from the introspective to the epic, this single It is a turbulent journey through emotions and sounds, where each member of the band has their moment to shine.

In contrast to the frenetic energy of the rest of the album, “Sad Pilot” imbues the lyrics with a deep sadness, telling the story of a lonely pilot who navigates the skies, searching for a purpose in the midst of loneliness. To return and give a preview of the closing, comes “Rats in the Sky” With frenetic guitars and dizzying rhythms, it describes a metaphor for the problems that lurk from above.

“Daily Blues” is the perfect track to close the album, capturing the monotony of daily life with a hint of optimism. The relaxed rhythms and warm melodies offer a final respite, a reminder that even on the greyest of days, there is always a silver lining.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard It not only demonstrates his ability to reinvent himself, but also his capacity to capture the essence of the human experience in all its complexity. Flight b741 It is an album that invites you to lose yourself in its sonic labyrinth, to reflect and enjoy, reminding us that music, like life, is a journey full of ups and downs, surprises and unexpected discoveries.
