FONTAINES DC “Here's The Thing” the new single (Watch the video)

Music news

Fontaines DC publish Here's The Thing, the third single from their fourth album “ROMANCE”, out on August 23 via XL Recordings.

“Here's The Thing” was written days before the band entered the studio to record the album.

“It’s an anxious melody that twists and turns into what it wants, back and forth between pain and numbness,” Chatten describes. It’s an urgent song, seeking autonomy in emotional extremes.

VIDEO

The accompanying cinematic music video is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luna Carmoon (Hoard, Shagbands, Nosebleed) and perfectly encapsulates the song’s intense feelings and paranoia. Channeling the essence of teen horror films like The Lost Boys and Phenomena, the video for “Here’s The Thing” immerses us in a traditional Irish dance competition, where chaos reigns supreme, unfolding through Carmoon’s unique and haunting lens.

THE DISC

ROMANCE is Fontaines DC’s most ambitious record yet, its 11 tracks peppered with ideas that have been filtered between Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan (bass) and Tom Coll (drums) since they released Skinty Fia in 2022.

The band’s sonic evolution, which showed its teeth on early records with antagonistic punk sensibilities, is an ascent toward grungier breaks, dystopian electronics, hip-hop drums, and dreamy Slowdive-esque textures that may surprise fans. The shoegaze touchpoints first pressed on Skinty Fia unfurl on ROMANCE like a purple bruise.

Working with Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Blur), the band left behind any “retro aesthetic,” as Chatten says, “we say things on this record that we’ve wanted to say for a long time. I never feel like it’s finished, but it’s nice to feel lighter.”
