“Ask That God” is the return of Australian duo Luke “Emperor” Steele and Nick “Lord” Littlemore, aka Empire of the Sun. Eight years since their last album, which wasn’t exactly anything special.
Once again the duo follows the successful path of their nostalgic fable pop. Futuristic atmospheres and suggestions made of sparkling and elegant visions that recall the fantasy films of the 80s.
In addition to this visual imagery, the duo has also pushed the envelope in music. In some songs it seems to hear a sophisticated version of Modern Talking or Abba. An enchantment in those suspended and light atmospheres.
I still can't quite figure out if “Ask That God” is a good album or not. As in all their projects there are a couple of songs of a higher level (Changes, Revolve ) interspersed with fairly evanescent fillers.
There is no shortage of romantic comedy ballads (Wild World and Friends I Know) and the suspended oriental and visionary pieces where Steele's voice is perfect for the success of the sound imagination (Rhapsody).
In the end, listening to it a few times, there is something that remains and something that disappears immediately. Yet another sound fable of the knights of the Empire of the Sun!
