Nirvana’s premonitory final concert with Kurt Cobain: What else could go wrong?

Music news

An intimate show in a terminal of an old Munich airport. A terrible acoustics with power outage included in the middle of the anthem ‘Come as you are’. A voice that betrayed its leader (he had severe bronchitis and pharyngitis). About 3000 people. And one premonitory joke by Krist Novoselic: “We are at the exit door. Grunge is dead. Nirvana It’s over”. The grunge band’s concert on March 1, 1994, There was nothing extraordinary about it, except that it was the last of Kurt Cobain. Just a month later, she took her own life.

Kurt Cobain was seen increasingly pale and sick, deteriorating. His voice often betrayed him and I wasn’t up to par of the intensity of their actions. She seemed in a bad mood. His companions, accustomed to his changing moods, did not give it importance. Over the past three years, the singer had fallen in the abyss, in the clutches of addiction. That’s how things were in February 1994when Nirvana started ‘In Utero European Tour’. A tour that passed, on February 8 and 9, through Madrid and Barcelona. And also for the WECB studies. However, that day, in the building on Gran VĂa 32, only Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl entered… of Cobain, no trace.

The 16 concerts that the grunge band had been offering in different European cities were becoming a downward spiral. In an article in ‘Esquire’ magazine there were those who described their leader as a ‘walking ghost’. The seventeenth show of his tour of the Old Continent took place on March 1, 1994, in Munich, in Terminal 1 of which It had been its international airport (it closed two years earlier). 3,050 people attended to the appointment… the last date with his three idols. The doors opened at 6:30 p.m. Melvinsfriendly band from Seattle with influence on Nirvana’s music, was the opening act.

The acoustics in the room were terrible.. Was not suitable for concerts of this type. Cobain didn’t know until the concert had already started… He gave no signs of life when the sound tests were done. In addition to Novoselic (bass) and Grohl (drums), they were accompanied by Pat Smear (guitar) and Melora Creager (cello). Nirvana came on stage at 9:05 p.m. and opened their performance with a sarcastic version of ‘My best friend’s girl’ by The Cars.

After six songs, and just as Cobain began to sing the first phrase of ‘Come as you are’, they had to stop the performance. A power outage. An uncomfortable moment that Novoselic encouraged with his usual sense of humor and with a ‘funny’ but premonitory comment: “We’re not playing in a huge stadium in Munich tonight. Because our career is in sharp decline. We are at the exit door. Grunge is dead. Nirvana is over.” Two minutes later the problem had been solved and they started the anthem of ‘Nevermind’ (1991) again. By now, it was obvious to the public that Kurt suffered from serious vocal problems.. It was significant that in the repertoire They didn’t include ‘Smells like teen spirit’ the topic that had catapulted them. Apparently, the song had become a prison for the band, and for Cobain in particular.

Despite Kurt was losing his voice.they did an encore. Five more topics. The first was ‘The man who sold the world’ (original by David Bowie). lThe last song that Kurt Cobain performed in front of the public was ‘Heart-shaped box’. A heart shaped box he turned at the culmination of his short career. It’s sad to hear the enormous effort he made to reach the high notes of the choruswhen the “Hey Wait/ I got a new complaint” part came. He even stopped trying and lowered the tone. The song ended and Cobain said goodbye to the audience with a simple “Thank you”

That night, Cobain was wearing a Sonic Youth t-shirt that was left forgotten in the locker room. The next day, a doctor diagnosed him severe bronchitis and laryngitis. It was clear that I was not in a position to continue and The remaining dates of the tour were cancelled. He traveled to Rome, where he overdosed on Rohypnol and champagne and went into a coma. One month after, On April 5, 1994, he took his own life.. His body was discovered three days after.
