The British band UB40 has shared the song Gimme Some Kinda Sign. It is the first single from her upcoming album, UB45which will be published on April 19, 2024; an album celebrates 45 years of the reggae band.
The new single breathes new life into a 1968 UK Top 10 classic. It is a version of the soul song by Brenton Wood, Gimme Little Signwith a new touch from the Birmingham group.
The song was chosen by the lead vocalist Matt Doylewho suggested it to the guitarist and composer Robin Campbell. “I was very happy when Matt suggested “Gimme” as a song he would like to cover, as it had been on my playlist for 40 years and I still have the 7” 45 vinyl. It says something about his musical knowledge that he chose a song recorded more than 20 years before he was born”says Campbell. To which Doyle adds: “Gimme Some Kinda Sign” is easily one of my favorite songs on the new album and is incredibly fun to play live. Recording was an absolute blast and I love what we’ve done with this song by an amazing old soul singer, who is now 83 years old, and if he heard it, I think Brenton Wood would probably be happy with it!”.
UB45which as we have mentioned will be released next April, includes seven new songs as well as seven new versions of some of the band’s most iconic songs, such as Food For Thought, King, Tyler, Red Red Wine, Cherry Oh Baby, Sing Our Own Song and Kingston Town.
The album opens with home, a song complete with signature UB40 beats and powerful themes of inequality and intolerance. Other new recordings include a new performance of Hope She’ll Be Happier (1971) by Bill Withers, Trouble, Say Nothing, Fool Me Once and the simple Championwhich was the official anthem of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Its name, UB40, was chosen as an allusion to the Unemployment Benefit Form 40, a document that referred to social assistance in the United Kingdom, which helped focus its political message on the discontent of workers, of humble origins. The group was formed in 1978 and throughout these 45 years he has sold more than 100 million albums, has had 50 UK Top 40 singles and 10 UK Top 10 albums.
The celebrations for these more than four decades of history will continue well into 2024, as the group will go on tour at the end of this year and will tour some of the large stadiums in the United Kingdom and will have special guests Soul II Soul. Before, during the summer, the group will also tour the United States.
