IDLES publish a clip with a deepfake of Coldplay

Music news

The clip repeats that of β€œ Yellow Β», by Coldplay, but with Chris Martin singing the IDLES song with the help of AI.

British post-punks IDLES called on Chris Martin (the real one from today and the one from 24 years ago) to help them direct the video for their new song, β€œ Grace “.

The music video is essentially the same one that Coldplay released in 2000 for their hit ” Yellow ”, with Martin walking in the rain along an empty and dreary beach. Only, he now appears to be singing the IDLES song, a feat achieved using AI deepfake technology.

The idea for the video came to IDLES frontman Joe Talbot in a dream, and the band not only got Martin’s approval, but also his help in making the music video a reality. Martin took the time to help train the AI and ensure its β€œ performance Β» in the video was as real as possible.

(IDLES is not the first group to pay homage to the music video for β€œ Yellow “: A few years ago, Tegan and Sara aptly recreated this famous solitary walk on the beach for their own song, also called ” Yellow “).

β€œ Grace Β» appears on IDLES’ fifth album, Tangk, which is released this Friday, February 16 on Partisan Records. The album was produced by Nigel Godrich, Kenny Beats and Mark Bowen, the band’s guitarist; it follows Crawlertheir 2021 album. Before the release of β€œ Grace “, IDLES announced the album with the singles ” Gift Horse ” And ” Dance ”, the latter featuring vocals from James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and Nancy Whang.

IDLES has a whole slate of tour dates coming up to promote Tangk. Dates in the UK and Europe are planned through March, while a North American tour kicks off May 2 in Vancouver.
