Lucas: from covering religious songs to reaching the final of OT 2023 singing Zayn Malik’s sexiest song

“Amen, amen. Quiet my restlessness, I ask you”, Lucas sang in 2021, covering the Montaner family in the song Amen. A verse that Buika could have told him in one of his evaluations at the academy. But at that time, three years ago, Lucas did not know that he was going to become one of the most evolved contestants in the OT 2023 academy. And the thing is, if Operación Triunfo has taught us anything over the years, it is that the contestants who are liked best by the audience are those who surprise. Because that’s what this program is about: that a person like you, who at first could go unnoticed by the audience, ends up becoming a superstar.

In the first galas of OT 2023, Lucas went unnoticed: he was the cute boy with long hair on whom the cameras focused – we are not going to fool ourselves – less than other of his companions. It is true that in the first weeks, the folder between Juanjo and Martin, and the trio of friends of Violeta, Salma and Chiara, monopolized all the attention. But, as in every movie, the true protagonist is not the popular boy who attracts attention, but rather the one who initially goes unnoticed.

In an edition from the early 2000s, Lucas would have attracted attention from day one: a cute, normative boy who sings love songs in Spanish. The record labels would already be rubbing their hands from the first moment the camera focused on him. But in 2024, luckily, television accommodates other, more diverse profiles, being an example of today’s young society.. In this way, the strong narrative of the beginning of talent was carried by other voices. Especially that of Juanjo and Martin. But, throughout the show, thanks to his way of being.

In fact, the artist was nominated in gala 1 of the program, being saved by the public in favor of Suzete. We almost ran out of one of the most entertaining stories of this edition. Because Lucas has had one of the most entertaining narratives of the contest.

Little by little it became noticeable

At gala 2, when he was nominated along with Suzete, the artist surprised with tell him by David Bisbal. What could have been just another performance of the edition became the moment where the audience made a clip with him. But the Lucas phenomenon had only just begun. It seems that from that moment on the academy cameras couldn’t stop focusing on him either. Who in their right mind would stop looking at such a perfect hairstyle? It is then that the spectators realized that this boy, in addition to singing well and having an attitude on stage (something that the jury and the academy teachers really like), was one of the best companions in the contest, having good words for everyone and making them feel good. What if we had had the hero of this edition before our eyes and we had not realized it?

Lucas, the survivor of Kiki fever

Lucas’s narrative gained weight until he became one of the protagonists. It was in the 10th gala of the contest when the Uruguayan starred, without knowing it, in one of the greatest feats of the contest: saving himself from the fever (possibly a bubble born from Twitter) of Chiara’s fans.

In gala 10, Lucas was nominated against Chiara (one of the contestants with the greatest fandom of the contest) and miraculously won. Neither the screens in New York’s Time’s Square nor the mass advertising of some brands managed to save Chiara. And, although we sometimes forget, social networks are a bubble and many of the people who watch the contest do not even have X installed on their device.

Lucas managed to save himself with 66% of the votes. Now everything was possible for Lucas (although he possibly didn’t know it). Luckily his teachers were there to remind him at Gala 12, on the way to the final, where they saved him to become one of the finalists of the edition. This Monday he will fully embrace his gentleman profile and sing pillow talkZayn Malik’s first solo song. Because we are sure that if Lucas were in One Direction, he would play the role of Zayn.

They were blunt and assured that the artist had had one of the best evolutions of the program. But he didn’t stop there, they also highlighted his always positive attitude. Because yes, Lucas is like one of those protagonists from the nineties. He is TJ in The backyard band. He has a good word, a good gesture and a moment for his teammates. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is OT: a talent with touches of reality.

A past of covers

Before joining OT, Lucas was already taking his first steps in music. The young man has his own YouTube channel where he uploaded different musical covers. From How did you sleep? from Relays B to Empty by Luis Fonsi. We also find a collaboration with Julián Martín in which he sings Amen: the Catholic song that Camilo sang with the entire Montaner family.

In the video he recorded to accompany this cover, Lucas appears dressed in white, as if he had just been reborn and returned to the world.
